Get to Know Us: Why HGC is Attractive to Ambitious Young People According to Industry Veteran – Harry Cheung
Known admirably as Har Gor, industry veteran Mr. Harry Cheung is the respected, marveled and revered section head of vendor management in the company. Harry seriously embodies the company’s motto of; “Go ahead, we’ve got your back”. Through his highly collaborative relationship with vendors, he maintains that delivering a speedy response is key in creating customer value for their real time actions. By maintaining impressive relationships with vendors, Harry highlights the benefit of being able to secure market intelligence as a key advantage to the customer by always making sure our products and pricing are competitive to the sales team thus the market. Despite being part of the pulse of the telecom industry, Harry is both a gentle and demure soul though very approachable as he welcomes any feedbacks or pointers for direction beneficial to character growth.
Without the need to show off or achieve distinguished status, he has just done exactly that by recognizing the key to success at work depends on the people around him. Always emphasizing the key to his success is his transparent attitude to cooperation, Harry turns up to work and recalls enjoying a rewarding time as he is surrounded by friends whom he loves to go out and catch up with. When asked about whether there is any competition with his peers. He reverts with a strong no. Not a fan of fuss, he values ‘smooth’ operation to his responsibilities. Being able to lead cooperative relationships with his colleagues is what drives his work ethics and results. As someone who is wiser than his years, he is confident to lead the change in a competitive and sometimes a corporate environment embedded with mystique.
For young people entering into large corporations, they may find the size and relations of it hard to orientate and find a way to make a meaningful impact. Therefore the company tries to avoid the scenario of a young candidate leaving after 1-2 years because they felt disheartened. As a result it can be seen that it is an aim to proactively counter this by sharing with them a road map at identified stages of their careers to show them their developmental potential. This is a positive measure hand in hand with the evolvement of HGC’s direction. Following the market trend, HGC has evolved from a pure telecom provider to a fully fledged digital infrastructure provider as a result of the wise strategies implemented. This expands the opportunities for young people and is what Harry believes should also nurture their existing interests.
When asked the top qualities a candidate for a good team fit should possess, Harry doesn’t reply with soft characteristics such as humility, compassion or respect but rather states something directly related to performance which is high analytical strength. This is music to the ears as the subjective element of a person’s assessment is taken out of the equation and a candidate can feel more fairly judged. However it can be inferred that qualities such as humility does exist when a candidate should work hard as much as smart. This could be because it involves the candidate’s ability to realise that the best cannot be achieved from cutting corners and making assumptions. To elaborate, Harry puts a learned observation into words of “never give up and you will have a chance to turn mission impossible to possible”.
