HGC CDO: Future of Technology Skills

I am often asked what are the next top tech trends. There are plenty of opinions, articles and reports on the next big thing shiny technology for us. However, what challenges most CIOs and CTOs is what does this all mean for the development skills you need in your technology team to enable these new emerging buzzwords, what technical skills and resources should you upskill for and investing in.

Here is my prediction for technical skills required for the future of technology trends.

"Blockchain has established itself as a ground-breaking technology with huge potential to transform businesses and impact every industry and sector. Besides, it is predicted that there will be 80 billion connected devices by 2025, generating about 180 trillion gigabytes of new data."

Chief Digital Officer of HGC

Blockchain

Since its emergence in 2008, Blockchain has established itself as a ground-breaking technology with huge potential to transform businesses and impact every industry and sector. As more organisations begin to realise the plethora of opportunities blockchain technology can offer, they are scrambling to get their hands on the limited supply of skilled and knowledgeable blockchain experts.

Top development skills:

1. Smart Contracts - Solidity or Simplicity

2. Hyperledger - Go or Python

3. Programming languages - Python

Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning

AI and machine learning is a hot topic of conversation across organisations as a whole, not only in IT departments. While not all companies are ready to hire these skills just yet, the demand is growing from employers keen to investigate and uncover the new opportunities that AI and machine learning solutions can provide. Which skillsets to invest in will depend which part of the AI & ML stack you are looking at for your innovation.

Top development skills:

1. Programming languages - Python, Lisp or Prolog

2. Deep Learning Frameworks - Apache MXNet, Torch/PyTorch, TensorFlow

3. Data Engineering- Flink, Beam, Spot

IOT

It is predicted that there will be 80 billion connected devices by 2025, generating about 180 trillion gigabytes of new data. Consumers will not be the only ones using IoT devices. Cities and companies will increasingly adopt smart technologies to save time and money. That means cities will be able to automate, remotely manage, and collect data through things like visitor kiosks, video camera surveillance systems, bike rental stations, and taxis. Basically anything you can put a sensor on.

Top development skills:

1. Network/Access - LoRaWan, 6LowPAN, Thread

2. Protocols and standards: CoAP, OMALWM2M, IPSO

3. Programming languages - Go, Kotlin, B#, Flogo

4. See Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning above

Of course, there are many other emerging technology trends and skills you can consider. These are just my personal preferences. Let us know what you believe are the future skills in technology.
