Telcos: Crucial To Digital Transformation Ecosystem

HGC launches International Telco-Services Marketplace riding on SDN technology and new API Hub, boosting competitiveness of carriers, OTTs and enterprise customers in every part of the telecommunications ecosystem through collaboration synergy.

Hgc Insight 7

You’ve been in senior management roles at HGC for more than a decade now. What has been the biggest change in how the company approaches its development and how do you plan to strategically drive it forward as its senior vice president?

As an infrastructure-based, ICT solutions and data centre services provider, HGC is constantly introducing new and innovative solutions to deliver a mix of services to meet
market demand, including security, cloud, data centres, SDN, API and more. We position ourselves as a catalyst to boost competitiveness in every part of the telecommunications ecosystem through collaboration, investment and synergy.

For example, HGC continues to enrich our recently launched Marketplace services by cooperating with carriers, over-the-top (OTT) ecosystems and data centre providers; expand BDx (Big Data Exchange) data centre, a content exchange platform built for OTTs, content providers and MNOs to extend service coverage worldwide.

Our SDN and API are key parts of our digital transformation strategy to create customer-centric services that are software-enabled, cloud-based and consumed ‘as a service’, bringing forth the true agility of end-to-end, zero-touch, on-demand services and revolutionising the traditional telecommunications network provision experience, increasing effectiveness and efficiency in business operations.

We believe that the development of 5G and IoT applications and Smart City rely on the carriers’ infrastructure and capability to act as the foundation and support for the emerging trend.

How does HGC plan to continue developing its SDN portfolio so that it becomes more programmable and more on-demand for business?

Under SDN platforms, carriers, OTTs and enterprise customers can enjoy the zero-touch provisioning of data centre connectivity, CloudConnect, Remote IX peering and intercarrier capabilities. In addition to these network IaaS services leveraging SD technology, we will continue to develop centralised orchestration to facilitate customer-managed XaaS services including network connectivity (IaaS), cloud-based (SaaS), network function (NFV), SD-WAN Edge, SD-DC, and more along the HGC softwarisation journey. Change is a certainty in this digital era and we continuously examine market needs to remain meaningful as a business and, ultimately, remain meaningful to our customers.

Which elements of HGC’s newly developed API Hub offer improved integration of APIs in multiple systems and how will this help your customers? How does it work efficiently to expose telecom carriers’ services in a fast and secure manner?

HGC API Hub is a cloud-based platform that provides the highest levels of availability, resiliency and scalability. It is a secure platform with throttling capability. We use RESTful APIs to expose our telecom resources to customers, and RESTful API supports most client languages, including Java, NodeJS, Python and PHP, and provides a simple, time- and cost-effective method for developers/customers who wish to consume our services. Our API developer portal provides instant access to the API definitions in Swagger format, further reducing the barrier to entry for new developers/customers.

Why is HGC the ideal supplier of SDN and API solutions and services? What advantage does the company have over its competitors?

Following on from our dynamic IDC connectivity service leveraging HGC’s extensive global network footprint that covers London, Singapore and Myanmar, etc., HGC has introduced CloudConnect to various public cloud platforms such as Amazon, Microsoft Azure, and more, all enabled on an SDNenabled platform. HGC-software-enabled infrastructure (SDNs and SDDCs) or infrastructure-as-code is a key area in which we can unlock operational efficiencies though sellable, flexible and reconfigurable infrastructure. HGC can also optimise availability and performance, and automate provisioning and activation, offering our customers flexible infrastructure and networks.

The new platform allows HGC to develop APIs for various services tailored to customers’ specific needs. For example, the A2P SMS API minimises the technical complexity and enables carriers, OTTs and corporate and enterprise customers to create and manage multiple messages via one platform in a convenient, fast and secure way. Riding on HGC’s numerous direct connection to MNOs, messages can be delivered easily to subscribers globally. For example, OTT customers use HGC A2P API to send OTPs (One-Time Password) and messages to subscribers worldwide. Along our roadmap, our services will be exposed via Numbers API, Pricing API and more. In addition, we are working with different carriers on ways to expose API to their OSS/ BSS for service automations, fulfilling the market’s diverse needs.
